Wheelchair Basketball:
The Mustangs end their regular season with a 14-15 overall record as they finish with a 3-game winning streak. The team played their final four games of the regular season Feb. 15-16 against the Sioux Fall Wheelers and the Timberwolves, taking only one loss against the Wheelers.
They will continue in their post-season games March 6-8 in Arlington, Texas for the NWBT Championships.
Track & Field:
The Southwest Minnesota track and field team saw some highlights in their February games. The team competed at the Minnesota State Open in Mankato Feb. 15.
Amanda Grengs placed fourth in the women’s 1-mile run while Austin LaFollette finished eighth in the men’s 400-meter dash. Chris Kveseth placed second in the men’s 600-meter dash while Alejandro Sanchez took the big win for SMSU finishing first place in the men’s 800-meter dash. Trailing behind him was junior O.J. Ojullu in fourth place. Paul Demings took fifth place for the men’s 1000-meter run.
The team went on to compete in the NSIC Multi pentathlon Feb. 16-17. The team continued their season in the Bemidji State Twilight competition Feb. 20.
Grengs advanced to a first place win in the women’s 1-mile run and second in the women’s 1000-meter run while Ojullu, Kelly Fitzsimmons and Austin Handley placed for the men’s 1-mile run. Dallin Finley took first for the men’s 60-meter dash. Julia Sauder finished fifth in the women’s 400-meter dash, followed by Nya Buom and Katie Grebinoski while Brock Schultz placed sixth for the men’s team.
LaFollette took second in the men’s 600-meter run; Ryan Spiegel – fourth in men’s 60-meter hurdles; Alycia Hohenstein (3), Michaela Nordby (4) and Samantha McNeel (5) in women’s 60-meter dash; Sanchez (1) and Ojullu (2) for men’s 800-meter run; Victoria Bensel took seventh in women’s 200-meter dash; Finley took first in the men’s 200-meter dash; SMSU took first in the women’s and men’s 4×400 relay; Rylee Armstrong took fourth for women’s high jump and first in women’s long jump and triple jump.
The team will continue their season at the NSIC Indoor Championships Feb. 28-March 1.
Baseball/Softball:
The Mustang baseball team takes a 1-3 overall record to begin their 2014 regular season while the Mustang softball team starts with a record of 0-4.
The Southwest Minnesota State University softball team took four straight losses in a row in two double-headers against the Colorado School of Mines Feb.15 and 16, respectively. They will continue their season against Missouri-St. Louis March 6 and North Alabama March 7.
The men’s baseball team took its first loss of the season Feb. 15 against Emporia State (Kan.) 7-11, but managed to take a win later in the day against Missouri Western State 7-6. However, the team took another two losses Feb. 16 against both teams. The team will continue their season over spring break in the Tucson Invitational March 7-15.
