On June 30, 2013, Russia passed a law that made any kind of propaganda pertaining to homosexuality or same-sex marriage illegal. The law was very vague on the particular propaganda, which gave authorities the right to ban and apprehend all forms gay rights activists. This was looked down upon by many nations. This disdain for this law maintained until Feburary of 2014, when the Winter Olympics would begin in Sochi, Russia.
Nations around the world took this event as an opportunity to show Russia how they feel. A part of the USA team had homosexual athletes, and it was confirmed by President Obama that they did this as a message against Russia’s Anti-gay laws. Germany also did a bold move by introducing their team at the opening ceremony with full rainbow uniforms. The rainbow is commonly known as the color for gay pride and LGBT movements. Even Google showed its support by doing its traditional doodle, which consisted of several of the events in the winter Olympics being shown above each letter of the word Google, while having a rainbow color as a backdrop.
There are many, many more examples that can be pointed out, but it would take way too long to get through them. The world decided to use the Winter Olympics to send Russia a message, and the message was quite clear.
