Shaping up to be one of the more interesting Olympic games, the 2014 Sochi Olympics are surrounded with by a media storm of terrorist threats, cautionary safety measures and plenty more.
Over the last few years, Russia’s (host country) government has grown more hateful of its LGBT community. One of the more recent laws passed by the Russian government is the ability for police to arrest and detain tourists or foreign diplomats who show “Pro-gay” propaganda or show some kind of support for the LGBT community as a whole according to the New York Times.
In response, many people and public figures have not gone quiet. What many view as a message to Russia’s new laws, President Obama has announced that he will not be attending the Sochi Olympics, nor will the vice-president or secretary members and is instead sending in his place a delegation. The great tennis legend Billie Jean King, a well-known openly gay athlete, will be one of the members attending.
In an interview with Stephen Colbert, King said she would gladly be arrested in Russia if it came to that and she is not afraid of the anti-gay laws and what her presence will bring once she arrives. Colbert said if she answers questions relating to the anti-gay laws while in Russia, she could be arrested on the spot.
So, besides the exciting sports and the introduction of more events in this year’s winter Olympics, there is a dark backdrop that threatens to overshadow the games themselves.
