The Southwest Minnesota State University Wrestling team picked up their first dual win of the season. The Mustangs defeated Waldorf (Iowa) with a score of 27-15. SMSU then fell to Wisconsin-La Crosse with a score of 25-15, but came back to defeat Wisconsin-Eau Claire 33-10 to end the day.
In the victory against Waldorf, Justin Reinsma picked up a 14-8 decision over Raymond McQueen to tie the score at 3-3. Ethan Hildebrandt followed Reinsma by pinning Dillon Spates at 1:08, giving the Mustangs a 9-3 lead. Waldorf picked up a pin and a decision during the next two bouts, earning nine points. However, SMSU’s Kyle Begin took a 5-2 decision. Jacob Begin pinned Waldorf’s Jacob Baumann at 4:48 to help the Mustangs to an 18-12 lead. SMSU’s Micah Larson earned six points after winning by forfeit, helping the Mustangs take the match 27-15.
In their loss against Wisconsin-La Crosse, the Mustangs dropped the first five bouts. Kyle Begin ended the drought with a pin over Sean Huls at 1:22. Kyle’s brother Jacob Begin followed with a 3-2 decision over Richard Carlson. SMSU’s Travis Peralta and Micah Larson dropped the next two bouts, followed by SMSU’s Jon Gorter, who won by forfeit. The Mustangs dropped the match 25-15.
SMSU’s Antonio Meikel and Justin Reinsma kicked off the match against Wisconsin-Eau Claire with wins by forfeit. Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestlers won by decision in the following two bouts. However, the Mustangs gained momentum. Matt Arnold won by a 15-3 major decision against Matt Koch, followed by Kyle Begin, who won by a 10-2 major decision over Mathew Laugen. Jacob Begin pinned Josh Cormican at 3:47, followed by Andrew Rodas, who won by an 8-0 major decision over Jacob Hoffstatter. SMSU’s Micah Larson fell to a Wisconsin-Eau Claire wrestler by a pin. SMSU’s Jon Gorter defeated Justin Karkula to finish up the match. The Mustangs defeated Wisconsin-Eau Claire 33-1.
