You hear them at the games, you hear them on the field and now, you hear them on the stage!
Under the direction of Dr. John Ginocchio and Dr. David Peterson, the Southwest Minnesota State University Pep Band showed off their skills with a list of tunes that were fan favorites mixed in with a 1980’s show. The band performed in concert style on Dec. 2 in the FA Theatre.
Tunes on the list included Runaway Baby, Time Warp, Sweet Caroline, Paint it Black, Smoke on the Water, Carry on My Wayward Son, Poker Face, Monster, Forget You, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Holiday, Crazy Train and the SMSU Fight Song.
The 1980’s show, which was placed in between the performance of the songs above included hits such as We’re Not Gonna Take It, Take On Me, Don’t Stop Believin’ and an 80’s medley (Thriller, Love Shack, Tainted Love, Jump, and Livin’ on a Prayer).
The SMSU Pep Band has had plenty to do over the semester, what with various games and a marching performance to boot, and members have a lot of musical tunes under their belt.
Though they have a long list of tunes to perform, the pep band members rarely get the opportunity to be center-stage.
Ginocchio shares that playing in concert style is one way for the Pep Band to do that:
“It’s nice that the Pep Band gets to be the main thing in the spotlight. Though it’s nice to support our teams in Pep Band, [the concert gets] people to watch the band and pay attention.”
