The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team began their season at the South Dakota State University Daktronics Open.
The team was led by Justin Reinsma, senior, who placed fourth in the Open (with a weight class of 133), finishing the day with a record of 3-2. Fellow senior, Codie Lane, would go on to win eighth place in his weight category – 157.
Junior Cole Wilson took fourth place in his weight class of 285 with a final record of 5-2 at the Open.
Other wrestlers who earned points at the event include Jacob Begin, Micah Larson, Ethan Hildebrant, Jake Slocum, Kyle Begin, Caleb Smothers and Justin Stevens.
The team returned to their home court on Nov. 13 against Concordia College, where they were defeated with a final tally of 15-18. This puts the team at 0-1 in the regular season.
Point receivers of the match included Kyle Begin, who won over Concordia’s Jake Krogstad, pinning him at the 42 second mark; Jacob Begin, beating out Sebastian Gardner 10-5; Larson won in sudden victory over Delson Saintal; and Wilson won by decision over Cody Kasprick, 3-2.
The wrestling Mustangs will face off against Concordia in the Cobber Open on Nov. 16 in Moorhead, Minn.
The team will return to SMSU after the New Year on Jan. 11 against Minot State.
