The Southwest Minnesota State University Mustang volleyball team closed their regular season on Saturday, November 16 with a win over Northern State University. The Mustangs took the match in four sets, 27-29, 25-21, 25-19, 25-20.
The Wolves never gave up the lead for the entire first set, outscoring the Mustangs 29-27. The Mustangs went on a 9-4 run late in the set to tie the score at 27, but two unanswered points by the Wolves lifted them over the Mustangs to take the first set.
For a majority of the second set, both teams matched each other point-for-point. Throughout the set, there were four lead changes. However, a 10-5 scoring run by the Mustangs at the end of the set, including a 6-point run, helped them take the set.
In the third set, the Mustangs took the lead at the beginning of the set and never gave it up. However, the Wolves put consistent pressure on the Mustangs, never allowing them to get more than six points ahead. The Mustangs took the third set 25-19.
The Wolves came out hot in the fourth set, refusing to give up the lead. However, the Mustangs were able to gain momentum during the middle of the set, outscoring the Wolves 14-4 to take the set with a score of 25-20.
Abbey Thissen led the Mustangs with 19 kills, while Claire Sames picked up 18, Whitney Burmeister with 16, and McKell Anderson with 13 to round out the double-digits for the Mustangs. As a team, the Mustangs hit .242 and recorded 12 blocks. Rachel Westby led the Mustangs defense with 20 digs. Emilee Gutzmer put up 67 set assists.
With the win, the Mustangs end their regular season with an overall record of 23-6 and 17-3 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Wolves fall to an overall record of 21-6 and 14-6 in the NSIC.
