While walking through the halls of SMSU, one may have noticed posters that read “Letter to a Soldier,” advertising an event lead by the RA of Armstrong, Elizabeth Senkyr. It is her main event this year.
“I was talking with some people from the National Guard and they said ‘the three main things they want are hot food, ice, and letters. Because it is impossible for us to give them the others we should send them some letters,” Senkyr said.
According to mapsoftheworld.com, “Afghanistan weather is characterized by dry hot cloudless summers and severe winters. The areas lying in the northeastern part of the mountains experience sub-arctic conditions having dry, cold winters.”
It is not difficult to imagine why soldiers who walk around in heavy gear would want a good meal and some ice to cool off.
Letters of Support is just one of the few ways we at home can show our support for our soldiers, many of whom live in adverse conditions. According to Senkyr, it is the least we can do to help those who put themselves in harm’s way to so that those of us at home don’t have to.
The event will take place on Nov. 13 and 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lower Student Center. The National Guard will be donating the supplies and mailing the letters. Both the National Guard and Senkyr say the best way to write these letters is to be sincere and personal. And even put a return address on the envelope so they know there is someone they can talk to. So stop by the Student Center and write a letter or two… or a dozen.
