It’s a sad time for hippies, automotive enthusiasts, Volkswagen fans and hipster alike.
The sixty three year production of the Volkswagen Type II, also known as the Transporter, Microbus, Kombi, or perhaps most commonly the “Hippie Bus”, is finally coming to an end. It had a good run with the longest running production of any single model in automotive history. Over 10 million were sold since its conception in 1950.
The van has seen a huge amount of popularity from all sorts of groups. It was the go to vehicle for the “hippie” culture of the 60’s. VW (Volkswagen) Van enthusiast clubs still exist today. The vans are a very popular staple of VW car shows as well. Campers and travelers also love it for its roomy interior and comfort.
Today, the Hippie Bus is only produced in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Due to new safety regulations being imposed that the van can’t accommodate, production will cease December 31st of this year. Many of the last vans to roll off the line will be “special editions”, colored in a darker blue and white, as homage to the colors many early Type II’s sported.
In a poll on National Public Radio’s website, 26% of respondents said the end of production of the hippie bus was “a bit of downer”, while over 68% of respondents were a bit more disappointed, saying they were “Totally bummed out.”
