On September 21, 2013, the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya was attacked by heavily armed men. The attack lasted until September 24, where the death count is at least 72, with most being civilians. Six of the dead are Kenyan soldiers, while five are of the attackers. The attackers are known as the al-Shabaab, and Islamist group, and claimed that their reason behind this attack was Kenyan Military deployment in Somalia. The attacked began around noon when around 10 to 15 masked assailants entered the mall with assault rifles. Witnesses claim that the attack began at the outdoor seating area of the Artcaffe at the front of the mall before moving inside. The attackers also had and used many grenades during the attack. Many of the mall patrons were used as hostages during the attack, but many of them were able to escape during the shooting. Over a span of 24 hours after the initial attack, more than 1000 hostages were rescued from the mall. On the night of the 23 and into the early morning of the 24 there was a decrease in firing, but resumed soon after. Once the police knew they had rescued all of the hostages, they conducted a final sweep of the building that involved the US and British forces as well. This sweep gave them the headcount of the dead, and then was able to capture 11 of the attackers with others being dead. Many witnesses later on discussed that the attackers were trying to kill non-Muslims and let the Muslims escape and that people were asked certain questions to prove that they were Muslims. One of those questions was whether or not the hostage knew who the mother of the Islamic prophet Muhammad was. Before it was blocked, a Twitter account claiming to represent the al-Shabaab released some statements about the matter, saying things like the attack was “just retribution” for the crimes that the Kenyans military committed. A spokesperson for the al-Shabaab, Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage, claims that there will be more “black days” unless Kenya withdraws its troops from Somalia.
