On Saturday, April 13, the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustang tennis team split a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matches, earning a 7-2 victory over Bemidji State, and falling 6-3 to Minnesota Crookston.
Against the BSU Beavers, SMSU picked up two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Crystal Overbaugh and Samantha Ritter dropped an 8-5 decision, followed by an 8-5 victory for Allison Niedert and Kayla Uphus. Hannah Hagen and Shelby Monahan won by default in No. 3 doubles.
In singles, SMSU won five of six matches, including two by forfeit. Katie Kienitz won 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 at No. 1, followed by a No. 2 loss for Monahan by a 6-7, 2-6 decision. Overbaugh recorded another win for the Mustangs with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3. Hagen increased SMSU’s lead with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4. Ritter and Uphus won their matches by default.
Against Minnesota Crookston, Ritter and Niedert picked up an 8-4 win in No. 3 doubles. This would be the Mustangs’ only victory in the doubles category. Kienitz and Overbaugh fell 5-8 at No.1, while Monahan and Hagen lost 2-8 in No. 2.
In singles play, SMSU dropped the first four matches, but won two in a row to finish out the match. Ritter earned a 6-2, 0-6, 1-0 win at No. 5, followed by Uphus’s 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6.
Kienitz fell 2-6, 1-6 at No.1, Monahan dropped No.2 0-6, 0-6, and Overbaugh lost a 3-6, 1-6 decision at No. 3 before Hagen picked up a 0-6, 3-6 loss at No. 4.
After the matches, the Mustangs have an overall record of 3-13 overall and 2-10 in the NSIC.
