Southwest Minnesota State University was represented by four wrestlers at the NCAA Division Two Championships in Birmingham, Ala. on March 8-9. Justin Reinsma, Jake Begin, Kyle Begin, and Travis Peralta all made the trip.
After earning an All-American status on Friday, March 8, Reinsma fell to Alphonso Vruno in the consolation third round on Saturday morning. With the loss, Reinsma dropped to the seventh place match, which would take place later that afternoon. During the match, he secured a 6-4 victory over Perry McAree of Chadron State. This marks the second year the Reinsma has taken home a seventh place finish.
During the tournament, Reinsma also earned an All-American status. Reinsma becomes just the second Mustang to be named an All-American twice. Link Steffen earned All-American honors for the Mustangs in 1997 and 1998.
Reinsma kicked off the tournament with a 14-6 loss to Cameron Throckmorton of Shippensburg University. Reinsma bounced back with a 6-2 victory over Lino Estrada of Grand Canyon University. After earning a victory by fall over Zachary Hale of Anderson University, Reinsma earned All-American honors. Reinsma caps off his season with an overall record of 28-9.
Jacob Begin started the weekend with an 8-4 loss to Chris Watson of Central Oklahoma University. Begin rebounded with a win over Keith Ryan from Pitt-Johnston during the consolation round. The season ended for Begin after a loss to Justin Samora of Adam State. With the loss, Begin ends his season with an overall record of 17-5.
Kyle Begin a victory by fall in the first round over Ray Hall of Colorado State University- Pueblo. Then, in the championship quarterfinals, Begin fell 4-3 in triple overtime to Mike Williams of the University of North Carolina- Pembroke. Begin ended his season with an 11-3 loss to Kelly Henderson of Central Oklahoma. Begin concluded this season with a record of 19-4.
In his opening match, Peralta fell 11-7 to Travis McKillop of Pitt-Johnston. Following the loss, Peralta dropped his next match to Charles Mason of Notre Dame (Ohio) in the consolation round. Peralta concludes his season with a record of 18-13.
