As we head into a new semester at Southwest Minnesota State University, we must prepare for new classes, new professors (for some) and a completely new schedule. Even with all of these new changes, we immediately become accustomed once again to life at SMSU.
This isn’t always the case, however, especially for new students and staff to the University. New staff members at SMSU include Diane Stieper, Sarah Smallfield and Barb Berkenpas.
Stieper moved to the area in 1991 and has worked at the Western Human Developmental Center for the past five years. She did outpatient care and was the director of Children’s Mental Health services. She holds a BA in Human Service Counseling and Human Service Administration and a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and Family Therapy. She also has a license in Marriage and Family Therapy. Stieper began at SMSU last semester on Dec. 10 as a therapist in Counseling and Testing Services – located in BA 156 and office hours are M-F from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
“I look forward to working with this population…with students…in an academic setting. People are looking to improve their lives…make changes in their life,” Stieper said.
Stieper also shared a quote: “I’m always at my therapeutic best when my client is a step ahead of me, coming up with solutions to their problems before I can otherwise suggest them.”
Another new member to SMSU is Sarah Smallfield. Her position is the Credentials Evaluator in the Registration and Advising office. She has previously worked in childcare, substitute teaching, part-time teaching and more. She attended SMSU and received her undergraduate and master degrees here.
“I look forward to knowing and meeting more of the faculty and administration personnel…also look forward to working with the students and helping them through the graduation process. I found a position I enjoy doing and am excited to be back at the university,” Smallfield said.
Barb Berkenpas, SMSU alum, has started as the new Account Clerk Senior in the Business Services office. Her previous work experience included Financial Capability or Literacy, directed toward the consumer, which included providing information, education or support to a collaboration of 25-30 organizations, agencies and businesses.
“[I’m looking forward to] everything and everyone…students and staff. I like the people, the work, the environment,” Berkenpas said.
New student and staff members are welcome to the university. For more information about SMSU, go to www.smsu.edu.
