The Undergraduate Research Conference is a big day for a lot of students, but for creative writing students, it means reading works they have been revising and working on since, possibly, their first semester.
On December 5th, Wes Huntington, Brittney Heimermann and Nick White, the last of the creative writing Senior Portfolio class, took the podium in the upper level Conference Center to read to a small, but excited group of family, friends, and faculty. The theme of their reading was “Well, This is Weird,” which was a poetically fitting title for this diverse group of writers.
Huntington read a tragic romance, crime story set in Minneapolis, pulling on the heartstrings of the audience. Heimermann read poetry she had written about her relationships with her mother and her hometown, Austin, Minn. Nick White read a short story, and wrapped up the reading with one of his award winning Slam Poetry performances, reminiscent of rappers and poets like P.O.S. and Bukowski.
A previous reading of other students of the creative writing Senior Portfolio class took place a couple weeks ago including Laura Bania, Chloe VanDuinen, Ashley Nyren, and Amber Carlson. This wraps up the Senior Portfolio readings for the year. Congratulations and good luck from The Spur!
