Poor shooting in the first half plagued the Southwest Minnesota State University women’s basketball team on Saturday, November 10 at the Pittsburgh State Classic. Despite a solid second half, the Mustangs fell to Missouri Southern 73-64.
Junior Bree Holleman led the Mustangs with a career-high 26 points with five 3-pointers. Holleman was 5 of 5 from the charity stripe and grabbed three rebounds, along with three steals and two assists.
Val Sahr chipped in 15 points, while Mikayla Saathoff added ten points for the Mustangs. During the first half, the Mustangs recorded a 19 percent shooting percentage, knocking down of 26 shots. They trailed 34-18 at the half.
The Lions held leads as large as 24 points at various times, including 53-32 with just under ten minutes left in the second half. However, the Mustangs fought back to cut the lead to 67-62 with just under a minute left in the game. A late run by the Lions sealed their 73-64 victory.
As a team, the Mustangs shot 34 percent from the field, knocking down 10 of 23 3-pointers. The Lions outrebounded (36-25) and outscored (26-14) the Mustangs from the paint. The Mustangs fall to an overall record of 0-2 with the loss.
